Not the brightest crayon in the box
Definition: Unintelligent person
知性のない人。
EX: He's not a complete idiot but he's also not the brightest crayon in the box.
彼は完全なる愚か者ではないが、かといって知性があるわけではない。
このbox は、色鉛筆やクレヨンの入ったcoloring boxを指しており、直訳すると、箱の中でいちばん明かるい色のクレヨンではない、となります。
明るい色は鮮やかで目立ちますが、ここでは知性があり賢い人の例えとなっています。そうではない、というのですから、逆に知性がなく、頭が悪いという意味になり、誰かを愚かと評する際の、婉曲的な表現となっています。
他にも同様の表現に、not the sharpest pencil in the pencil box
や not the sharpest tool in the shed といったものがあります。1990年代からこのような表現が一般に広まったと言われています。
