他者が、その経験から、どんな思いをしているかを理解すること。
"The team were now champions of the world. It was a great victory, and as

in their shoes."
そのチームは今や、世界チャンピオンだった。素晴らしい勝利であった。そして、彼らがトロフィーを掲げている間、私は、彼らの立場になって考えてみれば、どんな気持ちであろうかと、ただ想像することしかできなかった。
shoeは靴という意味ですが、口語において複数形shoes として、人の立場や状況、苦境や窮地という意味があります。
例文にあるbe動詞のほか、stand や walkといった動詞が使われます。
