The philosophical or ideological basis of a regulation.
ある規則についての哲学的、思想的な基盤
" The criminals were arrested and charged in accordance with the spirit of the law."
その犯罪者たちは、法の精神に基づいて逮捕され、起訴された。
本日は少々おかたい英語をとりあげてみました。
法律を文字通り形式的に解釈するのを the letter of the law というのに対して、その趣旨や真意に基づいた解釈を the spirit of the law と言います。
