Dig heels in
Meaning: To be firm and take a stand by resisting against something.
断固として、何かに対抗する態度をとること。
How to use: I suggested to my friend to buy the navy-blue suit instead of the grey one. But he dug his heels in and would not be persuaded.
私は友達に、グレーじゃなくてネイビーブルーのシャツを買いなよ、と勧めた。だが、彼は頑として聞き入れなかった。
人に縄を引っ張られても前に進むのを拒んで踏ん張る動物や、綱引きなどで足を踏ん張る様子を、他人に妥協せず頑固に一歩も引かないという意味に例えた表現です。
dig one's heels in の他、dig in one's heels という形でも用いられます。
