Meaning: Started/finished before me
自分より先に始める、終わる。
Example: I see you arrived earlier before me, you sure beat me to the punch.
あなたは私より先についた。確かに私の先を越した。
beat ＋someone ＋to the punch の形で、・・・に対して先手を打つ、出し抜く、という意味になります。
punch やbeat という単語からも想像できますが、ボクシングに由来する表現で、もともとはアメリカでよくつかわれていたそうです。
